Rivertowns Table Tennis Club by Judith Doolin Spikes
[The Rivertowns Enterprise, Sept. 8, 2006]
The club was founded about 1999 by Steve Kanfer and Steve Zeitlin of Hastings and played two or three times a week
at that village's James Harmon Community Center until it was razed for rebuilding. They now play at Ardsley's
community center on Wednesday and Friday nights (and in Tarrytown on Sundays and Tuesdays).
"We're a registered official club of the USATT (United States Association of Table Tennis), but since membership is
free and open to anyone who shows up to play, it's hard to say how many 'members' we have," says Rob Bernstein of
Ardsley, an educational therapist specializing in autism. "On a typical night in Ardsley, I'd estimate we have 15
to 20 players."
Among the most dedicated players are Will Shortz of Pleasantville, crossword puzzle editor for the New York Times;
Bob Mankoff of Hastings, cartoon editor for The New Yorker magazine; author Kanfer; and folklorist Zeitlin.
"We welcome all ages, all abilities," Bernstein says. "We just love this stuff."
